Empowering Youth Through Constitutional Literacy and Safe Police Interactions
Overview
The “Learn 2 Live” initiative is a decade old program dedicated to addressing one of the most pressing issues impacting communities of color in the United States: the often-tragic encounter between young people of color and law enforcement. By fostering education, understanding, and meaningful dialogue, the program seeks to reduce the trust gap, decrease hostilities, and most importantly, save lives.
Over the past decade, the deaths of young Black men and women during police interactions have become a recurring and deeply concerning issue. A lack of trust, comprehensive policies, and understanding on both sides has created an environment of fear, anger, and frustration. Recognizing this, Learn 2 Live aims to equip young people with the tools to navigate encounters with law enforcement, emphasizing constitutional rights while highlighting the responsibilities of both citizens and police.
Curriculum
The program is structured around three primary components, each designed to inform, engage, and empower participants:
1. Understanding the Law & Your Rights:
A deep dive into the Fourth Amendment, including protections, rights during police encounters, and legal exceptions like “plain sight” and “smell tests.”
An overview of the evolving legal landscape in jurisdictions where policies around marijuana and search protocols have changed.
2. Interactive Workshops:
Simulated police encounters that allow participants to practice real-world scenarios in a controlled, educational setting.
Youth volunteers engage in mock situations, learning best practices for responding to traffic stops, community policing, and home interactions.
3. Panel Discussions with Law Enforcement:
Panels feature law enforcement professionals who engage in candid discussions with participants.
These dialogues aim to break down barriers, foster mutual respect, and provide a non-threatening platform for questions and concerns.
